What I did when bad news hit this week

I received some difficult business news this week.

The kind that lands in your chest.

I felt it right away. My heart was racing, and I wasn't breathing properly. And that familiar loop starting in my head, "Ok, what does this mean, what do I do, what if…"

My husband noticed immediately.

He looked at me and said, "Okay. Now, time to practice what you preach."

He was right.

So I walked to the sink and washed my face with cold water. Drank a full glass of water. Opened the window to let in fresh air. Then I lay down, put one hand on my belly, and one on my heart, breathing slowly.

It didn't fix the reality.

But it broke the spiral. And that was enough to think clearly again.

I'm sure you've had moments like this.

A stressful email. A conversation that didn't go well. News you weren't expecting.

And the harder you try to think your way through it, the worse it gets.

Here's what's actually happening:

When stress hits, your nervous system shifts into survival mode. Cortisol and adrenaline flood your system. Your heart rate increases. Blood moves away from your brain and toward your muscles - preparing you to fight or run.

Which is useful if you're escaping from danger.

But not so useful if you're trying to make a clear decision or show up calmly in a meeting.

The problem is, your body can't tell the difference between a real threat and a stressful thought. It reacts the same way.

What you can do is to send a signal of safety to your body through small physical actions -and trust your nervous system to follow.

That's why these quick resets work. They interrupt the loop and tell your body: "We're okay. Come back to now."

15 quick resets when stress takes over:

  1. The 4-7-8 breath: Inhale for 4 seconds. Hold for 7. Exhale for 8. Holding your breath briefly increases CO2, which triggers a natural calming response when you exhale.

  2. Feet on the floor: Press both feet flat into the ground. Feel the pressure. Hold for 10 seconds.

  3. Shoulder drop: Lift your shoulders up to your ears. Hold for 5 seconds. Then let them fall completely. Repeat 3-5 times.

  4. Jaw release: Unclench your jaw. Let your teeth separate. Gently move your jaw side to side.

  5. Hand on belly: Place one hand on your chest, one on your belly. Breathe slowly until only your belly moves. Five breaths are enough to activate your parasympathetic system.

  6. 5-4-3-2-1 grounding: Name 5 things you see, 4 you hear, 3 you can touch, 2 you smell, 1 you taste. This interrupts rumination and anchors you in the present moment.

  7. Go to the bathroom: Step away and wash your hands and face with cold water. This activates your dive reflex and immediately slows your heart rate.

  8. Open a window: Breath in some fresh air. Changes in temperature and oxygen shift your state.

  9. Drink a full glass of water: Dehydration amplifies anxiety. Sometimes what feels like panic is just your body asking for water.

  10. The verbal reset: Say out loud: "I'm here. I'm safe. I am supported."Speaking activates your vagus nerve and engages the language part of your brain.

  11. Warm mug ritual: Make a tea. Hold the mug with both hands. The warmth signals safety to your nervous system.

  12. Neck release: Tilt your head slowly to one side. Hold for 10 seconds. Switch.

  13. Shake it out: Stand up. Gently shake your hands, arms, and shoulders. Let your whole body loosen for 20-30 seconds.

  14. Put on a favorite song: Listen without doing anything else. Let the music move through you.

  15. Heart Rate Coherence: Hand on heart, breathe to match your heartbeat rhythm. This syncs your body and mind.

Your Tiny Experiment

This week, pick one reset from this list.

Write it on a sticky note. Put it where you'll see it.

And the next time stress starts building, try it and notice what shifts.

I'd genuinely love to hear which one you chose and what happened.

With grounded energy,
Gözde
