I finally made time for something I had been postponing for a while.
My yearly health check-up.
Just one of those things you know you should do, but keep pushing to next year.
This time, I finally convinced my family to join me.
One of them was going through a tough phase at work.
A lot of pressure, not much fulfillment, and that constant feeling of just pushing through the day to get to the evening.
You know that phase. “It’s just temporary.” “It will pass.” “I’ll take care of myself later.”
Then the results came back.
And they were enough to stop and think.
The kind where your body is basically saying:
“This is not working anymore.”
When we looked at everything together, it was obvious. It was stress and pressure.
It was how she had been feeling for months. And it was now showing up in her body.
That’s the part I think we underestimate.
Unfulfilling work doesn’t hit you all at once. It shows up in small ways first.
And over time, you start to notice the same patterns:
You start using food to cope
You know those evenings where you walk into the kitchen, and you’re not even sure what you’re looking for?
You just open the fridge. Then the cupboard. Then you grab something.
Not because you’re hungry. More like the day got to you, and you want something that feels good for a second.
Until you sit there thinking, “Why did I even eat that?”
Food becomes less about energy and more about comfort.
Your energy and sleep start breaking down
You go to bed at a decent time. And still… you wake up tired.
That kind of tired where coffee feels like survival, not a choice.
You’re lying in bed, but your mind is still replaying the day, your conversations with your colleagues. What you should have said differently.
Because your body hasn’t really switched off and was still running in the background all night.
Your focus and mental clarity drop
You’re sitting in front of your laptop, reading something… and halfway through, you realize you didn’t register any of it.
Or you walk into a room and forget why you went there.
Or you keep delaying a simple decision that normally would take you two minutes.
It’s not that you suddenly “can’t think.”
It just takes more effort.
And over time, you feel brain fog and mentally overloaded.
Your boundaries slowly disappear
You’re on the couch, technically done for the day.
Phone next to you.
Notification from your manager, you pick it up for a second… and you’re back in your inbox.
And suddenly there’s no real end to your day anymore.
You disconnect from yourself
At some point, you stop asking yourself what you actually need.
Your days start to look the same. Wake up, work, get through it, repeat.
And the things that used to give you energy?
You keep saying, “I’ll do it this weekend.”
Then the weekend comes… and you’re too tired.
Now it’s mostly work… and recovering from work.
You numb instead of recovering
You finally sit down in the evening. (That moment you’ve been waiting for all day.)
So you grab your phone.
You’re just switching from work stress to screen stress.
Your body is still “on,” still running on cortisol, still looking for relief.
Your body and relationships start reacting
And then there’s the part you can’t ignore as easily.
Your shoulders feel tight. Your neck is stiff.
At the same time, your patience gets shorter.
You get irritated by things that normally wouldn’t bother you.
And afterward, you think, “Why did I react like that?”
This is exactly what I saw reflected in the results.
Because at the end of the day, it’s not just numbers on a blood test.
It’s seeing someone you care about not feeling like themselves anymore.
Feeling like they’ve lost control over their health.
That part is hard.
But one thing I always come back to: Your body is not against you.
Your body is constantly trying to bring you back to balance.
It’s always trying to heal. Even now. Even after months of stress.
We just need to support it. Work with it. Partner with it. And most importantly - listen when it starts speaking.
And it often starts with something that doesn’t feel easy:
Putting yourself at the top of your list.
Leaving the second and third empty.
Because everything else will always try to come first.
Your work. Your family. Other people’s expectations.
But your energy is what everything else depends on.
Your Tiny Action:
If any of the 7 felt too familiar - that’s the point.
Not to worry you. Just to remind you.
Your body has been trying to tell you something. Maybe it’s time to listen a bit closer.
One simple way to check in with it:
When was your last health check?
If it’s been a while, take this as your reminder to schedule it.
With grounded energy,
Gözde
P.S. My perfectionist side almost didn’t want to go.
After a month of enjoying life here in Turkey (and yes, a few more treats than usual), I felt a bit ashamed to show my doctor my results.
But I went anyway.
And when she compared my results to last year, she said that almost everything had improved.
Because of what I’ve been doing consistently over time. (not perfectly)
And I think that’s an important reminder:
It’s not just one broccoli that makes you healthy. And it’s not one brownie that makes you sick.
It’s what you do most days that counts.
In how you eat, move, rest, and handle stress.
So keep that perspective 💛
Let's stay connected!
